Buddhism and jainism both are emerged in 6th century BC. Both religions came into existence due to the religious revolution that took place at that time and the main objective of both of them was to remove irregularities and evils in the Hindu religion, so it was natural to have many similarities in these two religions. This is the reason that for a long time people considered Jainism as part of Buddhism . That is, Jainism was not born cause of Buddhism, but both of them were born due to the same reason, so they had many similarities.
Similarities Between Buddhism and Jainism
Buddhism and Jainism had the following similarities:
(1) SOURCES – The source of both Buddhism and Jainism was the Upanishad. DR. R C Majumdar wrote -“Both Jain and Buddhism have the background of Arya culture, both of them are inspired by the views and philosophies of the Upanishads.” Buddhism and Jainism provided theories of Upanishads in their own way.
(2)EQUALITY IN OBJECTIVES AND PRINCIPLES – Many of principles and objectives of jainism and boddhism are equal.The main purpose of both of them was to oppose Vedic religion.Both religions have approved the principles of karma, rebirth and liberation.Apart of this, both religions emphasize nonviolence, truthfulness and ethics
(3)OPPOSITION OF THE VEDAS – Buddhism and Jainism opposes the Vedas; Both religions are strongly opposed to Vedic rituals; Both religions also oppose polytheism.
